Disinfect your tools after using them. Make cuts in branches at about 45 degree angles. Leave the base of the shrub wider than the top. The same pruning technique can be used if they are planted as a specimen.

Begin to open up the center of the shrub by pruning several of the oldest tallest branches. Sterilize all pruning tools in a solution of 1 part bleach or alcohol and 9 parts water. Soft pink flowers line the gently arching branches in early summer. Every 5 10 years ninebark shrubs will benefit from a hard rejuvenating pruning.

Best if pruned immediately after blooming. The plant goes dormant and in spring just before blooming begins. For these plants pruning should be done in the early spring before they leaf out. Ninebark shrubs also need good air circulation as they are prone to powdery mildew.
