Flowers in late spring small 5 white petals about 30 stamens 3 5 pistils in dense hemispherical clusters corymbs. The inflorescence is a cluster of bell shaped flowers with 5 rounded white or pink petals and many stamens. The leaves are palmate with 3 to 7 lobes and often toothed edges. Physocarpus are deciduous shrubs with alternately arranged leaves.Physocarpus capitatus commonly called pacific ninebark or tall ninebark is a species of physocarpus native to western north america from southern alaska east to montana and utah and south to southern california. Most species are native to north america. Fruit small inflated follicle reddish to brown about 6 mm long. Near the coast and at higher elevations it can take full sun.
At lower elevation inland locations it benefits from part shade and moisture. Ninebarks are so called because it was believed there are nine layers or nine strips of peeling bark on the stems. Sun to shade best in acid soil requires some watering. The bark is flaky and peels away in many layers.
