Weeping yaupon holly is an evergreen shrub or tree native to north america. Light annual pruning is recommended if you are growing the plant as a hedge. The tree responds well to pruning and shearing. This is a relatively low maintenance shrub and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed.Limbs may be removed to expose the bark which is a lovely grayish white. The yaupon holly ilex vomitoria can be pruned as a large shrub or a small tree. First lady yaupon holly. The leaves are alternate ovate to elliptical with a rounded apex and crenate or coarsely serrated margin 1 4 5 cm long and 1 2 cm broad glossy dark green above slightly paler below.
Sometimes clipped into a tight hedge yaupon holly is ideal for training into a small tree with lower branches removed to reveal the interestingly contorted multiple trunks. Relative newcomer and may be hard to find in retail stores. After planting apply mulch at the base of the plant to keep the soil moist and cool. For the most part hollies are extremely hardy suffering from few pests or diseases.
