Spots on red tip photinia!!!

If you have red tip photinia in your yard you are most likely familiar with the red purple photinia leaf spots that can appear on the leaves. Eventually the red spots turn into a gray area rimmed by red. I have 5 red tip photinia hedges totally 26 plants. This disease appears as red spots across the leaf surface.

However in moist climates with very wet spring and fall seasons it may prove fatal to your photinia hedge. Dig up with a trowel and remove ground cover plants growing beneath red tip photinia. Entomosporium leaf spot which is caused by the fungus entomosporium maculatum is a severe problem on red tips. Disinfect pruning shears with household disinfectant and prune red tip.

In a matter of days the spots enlarge and eventually become dark purplish circles surrounding gray dying tissue. Unfortunately red tip photinias are particularly susceptible to leaf spot diseases. Photinia leaf spot disease is caused by a fungal pathogen. This disease commonly occurs on the southern landscape plant red tip photinia.
